Can you believe it is almost Iowa State Fair time?? I love the month of August. Not only because my birthday is this month, but I also love going to the Iowa State Fair. My mother and I love to go on the first day to see the big boar being weighed in and do a lot of people watching and eating. We have our favorites foods that we usually share, so we have room for more. This year, they have added 19 new items, and, no, they are not all on a stick. The first Friday night is also one of my favorite things to do.
I hope you all haven’t forgotten about MWN since we had a month off. Please join us on August 18th at Gilroy’s in West Des Moines. Gilroy’s is the old Jimmy’s American Café that has been transformed into many different things over the years. They seem to be doing a great job picking up where Jimmy’s left off. Our speaker Rekha Basu (who you may recognize as a columnist for the Des Moines Register) is going to speak about her new book. She is the author of the book, “Finding Her Voice,” which is a compilation of columns on women’s struggles and triumphs in the Midwest. That topic sounds like it is right up our alley. She is also giving away a signed copy of her book.
Don’t forget next month in September we attend the Girls Night Out sponsored by Unity Point. We will send out details on this event once the date has been confirmed. In the past it has occurred on the same night we have MWN. It is a really fun event in the East Village, and a plus that it is FREE. Hope you can join us.
Be thinking of nominations for board positions. This year is coming to an end quickly with the holidays just around the corner. This commitment doesn’t take up much of your time, and it is a fun group. It is always nice to include new faces on the board to get a fresh new perspective and new ideas.
See you soon!!
