October 2019

October 10, 2019

A few years ago I attended a talk on fraud given by Frank Abagnale.  Who is Frank Abagnale?  If you saw the movie “Catch Me If You Can” with Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio, you saw the Hollywood version of part of Frank Abagnale’s life.  He was an international con man (and had posed as a doctor and lawyer) before the age of 21.  After his arrest in France and prison time in France and Sweden, his US jail time was commuted to parole working for the FBI to help fight fraud.  It was an extremely interesting session.

It really opened the eyes to how much fraud and scamming is out there.  I learned the paper shredder that I had wasn’t very effective in protecting privacy.  The shreds from the shredder could be put together by other machines in a few minutes.  SCARY!!!  Even the crosscut shredder wasn’t very effective as the same machines could put the documents back together in just a few more minutes.

Our speaker for the October meeting is from the same organization that brought Frank Abagnale to Des Moines a few years ago.  Who among us doesn’t worry about fraud, being scammed or having our personal identity taken?  Help protect and arm yourself by coming to this month’s meeting.  We’ll be at Fire Creek in West Des Moines (corner of Mills Civic and 50th, behind Walgreens).  We’ll have good food, good company and a great topic. RSVP before 10/14 at http://www.mwniowa.org/calendar.
